Retrofit vs brick-to-brick window installation
Retrofit leaves the existing frame in the wall and fits the new window inside it. Brick-to-brick removes the frame entirely back to the masonry. Retrofit is correct when the existing frame is structurally sound, which is most of the time; brick-to-brick is correct when the frame is rotted or water-damaged, and adds $250 to $450 per opening.
What replacement windows cost in Ontario in 2026
A supplied-and-installed replacement window in Ontario runs roughly $900 to $1,750 per opening in 2026. Sliders and fixed units sit at the low end, casements and hung windows in the middle, and bay or bow units run $3,400 to $6,500 because they require structural support and their own roof.
ER rating and U-factor, explained
U-factor measures how fast heat escapes — lower is better. Energy Rating combines heat loss, air leakage and solar gain into one number where higher is better. For ENERGY STAR certification in Canada a window must meet a maximum U-factor of 1.22 W/m²·K or a minimum ER of 34; it qualifies on either one, not both.
