Steel entry door

An insulated steel skin over a polyurethane core. The most security and the most insulation per dollar in the catalogue.

Steel dents rather than cracks, and a dent is permanent — which is why we do not put steel where a hockey stick or a bike lives. It also shows thermal bowing on a south or west elevation with a dark colour, so we steer dark finishes toward fibreglass on those exposures.

Fibreglass entry door

A composite skin, usually moulded to a wood grain, over the same insulated core. It does not dent, rot, warp or bow.

This is what we install on most Ontario front elevations. It takes a dark colour on a sun-facing wall without the thermal movement steel shows, it accepts a stain finish convincingly enough to read as wood from the sidewalk, and it is the right answer where a heritage guideline wants the appearance of wood without the maintenance.

Entry with sidelites

A door with one or two glazed panels flanking it, sometimes with a transom above.

This is the single biggest visual change available to a front elevation, and it is the reason most people call about a door at all — the hall behind it is usually dark. Sidelites are also where privacy glass earns its cost, because the panel sits at eye height beside the lock.

Patio slider, 5ft or 6ft

One fixed panel, one sliding. Nothing swings, so it takes no floor space on either side.

The correct choice when a dining table, a deck rail or a barbecue sits close to the opening. Modern rollers and an interlock stile have largely fixed the draughtiness that gave 1970s sliders their reputation.

Patio slider, 8ft or 9ft

The same assembly at a wider span, usually three panels.

A wider opening puts real load on the header, so this is one where the structural check at the estimate is not a formality. On a retrofit into an existing 6ft opening, widening triggers a building permit in every GTA municipality.

Garden & French doors

Hinged panels that swing, rather than sliding. One active leaf and one fixed, or both active.

A French door gives you the full opening width when both leaves are open, which a slider never does — a slider always loses half its width to the fixed panel. The cost is swing space, indoors or out, and a more demanding weather seal at the meeting stile.
